The dates are set for the 2023 European Judo Championships, with the action heading to the Sud de France Arena in Montpellier from November 3-5. That will act as a poignant homecoming for the team of French judoka, who just a matter of months ago topped the medal table – from a European perspective, at least, behind Japan – at the 2023 World Judo Championships. Given that this French team also dominated the European Championships last year, winning more medals than any other nation, will they once again prove to be an unstoppable force on home soil?
The Grand Palais Ephémère, at the foot of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, was the scene for the Olympic test event, one year before the Olympic Games in Paris. The venue is packed and is beginning to emit that very characteristic breathing of major sporting events.

Mark van der Ham returns as coach at Judo Flanders. The coach who achieved great successes from 2017 with Matthias Casse and Jorre Verstraeten, among others, made the move to the Judo Federation of Azerbaijan as technical director in 2022. In Azerbaijan Van der Ham didn't find the optimal connection that would lead to greater success in the Azerbaijan team. Van der Ham left the team by mutual agreement and got his hands free to further develop his Sport Institute De Korte.

The new heavyweight champion in the cadet age group is for Turkiye where Ibrahim Tataroglu gave not much space to the other, but in the final Akiana Mongo gave Tataroglu quite a headache, out-gripping him, a real struggle to deal with. Eventually though the Turk solved the conundrum and threw twice with makikomi to become cadet world champion. His father Selim never won the world title, but was one of the dominating characters in the heavyweight division as a senior in the late nineties. He captured 12 European medals including four European titles. Now it's up to Ibrahim with his first major step.
The world title U90kg went to Ukraine talent Nikita Yudanov who gave a faultless display all the way to the final. He’s the current European cadet champion and world number one and showed everyone exactly why.
The world title for the girls U70kg was captured again by Serbija, the second this championship and the second ever after Boris Rutovic won the gold medal one day earlier in Zagreb. In the final Andric and Turkish Tuana Gulenay didn’t waste any time, attacking and positive, looking for early scores. Andric went in first but was caught with a lovely sukashi for waza-ari, answered almost immediately with a massive ashi-guruma for waza-ari and then an osoto-gari for another. Aleksandra Andric (SRB) is the new cadet world champion at U70kg.
France and Japan decided that in the heavyweight women’s group they would each place an athlete in the semi-final stage at the Cadet World Championships in Zagreb. It’s an old rivalry and one which has no predictable result. The French heavyweight women’s school is the best in the world at the moment and so finding Celia Cancan winning again and again was no surprise.
The world titles for women at the third day of the Cadet World Championships both went to Japan. Yuri Shimizu of Japan was another unseeded unknown who captured the highest stage on the podium.
Riko Honda stole the show in Zagreb at the World Championships with a first world title for Japan's talents. Honda captured the world title U57kg. It was the third world title in history for Japan U57kg as in 2015 Ryoko Takeda won and in 2019 Rin Eguchi grabbed the world title.
The world title U81kg went to Serbian judoka Boris Rutovic. Rutovic went down a waza-ari in the first thirty seconds of their semi-final and 30 seconds later was almost held down too. It looked inevitable that the Kazakh would reach the final against Italian Alessandro D’Urbano.
